Join update: 10/20/11

I was reminded yesterday that I’ve been woefully negligent in keeping folks updated on what’s happening/upcoming with Join — the lack of emails to report back on has left me thinking of other things πŸ™‚

With that said, there’s plenty upcoming. Much of my recent attention has been taken up by the Mozilla Festival, which is now just over two weeks away. Mark Surman has been doing a lot of outreach to registrants, and we’re doing a lot of planning for how to engage folks before, during, and after the Festival. It’s “unconference” nature reminds me a lot of NOI’s Rootscamp, but the design challenges especially are something I’m super-excited to experience first hand.

There are also two campaigns we’re currently thinking a lot about.

One is centered around the Mozilla Manifesto. Inspired by a twitter conversation last weekend between Mark Surman & David Ascher, I’m hoping to be able to provide a way for people to essentially “endorse” or “add their name” to the Manifesto. It’s obviously a somewhat in-the-weeds statement of principles compared to the average sign-on campaign on something like, but I think it’ll be a great way for folks to engage in an easy way that we don’t really have at the moment, while also highlighting the mission-based aspect of Mozilla that we want to emphasize organization-wide.

The other is an end of year fundraising campaign, which will be helped along by an animated video we’re putting together to tell the foundational story of Mozilla (essentially “How the Web was Won“), tying it into the work we’re doing today. It’ll have utility far beyond this campaign — my hope is that it will provide a great storytelling asset for the foreseeable future — but it should really help this year, too.

With that said, I also wanted to give a numbers update on where we are YTD in our online efforts. This is all pages on fundraising (including Moz Fest signups and the Open Web Fund), and is accurate as of Monday afternoon:

Total 2011 Donors/Donations: 7,364/7,711
Total 2011 Amount Raised: $197,845
Total 2011 Donors subscribed to email: 5,579
Total Non-Donors subscribed to email: 21,154
Total Non-2011 Donors subscribed to email: 209
Total followers of @Mozilla: 2,329

And, finally, I’m working on switching in a more optimized version of the main “join” page — moving from this (zoomed out in the image below to include all text/fields) to this (current page image above, newer one below):

FWIW, I think having only a $5 donation and a $30 donation limits donations. What if I want to give $15? What if I want to write in a donation amount? Can we open these options up to more than 2?

It might also be a good idea to explain to people what a non-profit is on your new page (we see that over and over again on user engagement channels.) People are like – “oh, Mozilla doesn’t have shareholders?” I’m not sure people don’t glaze over the words “non-profit.”
